A New Kind of Designer Baby

Fact of Life #8: A mother’s diet can influence the sex of her unborn child. Link

And here I was thinking that the only way to choose the sex of your baby was to wait until you were rich enough to afford to pay someone to genetically engineer a designer baby for you.

That’s crazy stuff, isn’t it? How cool is that.

The article has a bunch of stuff about how this has implications in developing countries, where mothers eat less, which correlates to more girl babies and less boy babies. And it also has a little bit of speculation as to why this is. From an evolutionary standpoint, it benefits more to have boy babies when the conditions are good, because a male can father far more babies in his lifetime than a female can produce in her lifetime. On the other hand, it benefits more to have girl babies when the conditions are bad because females reproduce more consistently.

Woww. That’s pretty rad.

Never.

Fact of Life #7: You should never, ever put pictures like this up on the internet. Not on facebook. Not on myspace. Nothing. It doesn’t matter how much you loved She’s The Man.

That’s just creepy. I have nothing else to say.

Ouch

So we ordered take out from Macaroni Grill today, which is great, cause pasta is yummy. And I was all excitedly opening up the lil take-out container, you know the kind that’s aluminum-y and that you have to like flip the sides open for, when I gave myself a gigantic cut. Yea, from the take-out container.

This is what happened to me..

Except in real life, it’s even larger (covering about the entire width of my thumb), and deeper. And it’s not bleeding because I washed it and stuck a band-aid over it.

So, the moral.

Fact of Life #6: The metal take-out containers that you might think are so convenient and user friendly can severely gash up your thumb or other parts of your body. They’re dangerous. Be careful.

Popliteal Fossa?!?

Fact of Life #5: The back of your knee is called the popliteal fossa.

Well. That’s no fun. So let’s coin a word here and call it the… kneenis. Because the extra lil flap of skin on your elbow is called your weenis (Thanks to Friends. What a great show).

Fact of Life #5.5: The back of your knee should be is called the kneenis.

Too Much Faith

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,341574,00.html

An 11-year-old girl died of treatable diabetes because her parents prayed instead of seeking medical help.

This reminds me of that joke/parable/story of the guy who died in the flood. He sat on a roof and refused to be rescued, first one boat, then by another boat, and finally by a helicopter. When he reached heaven he asked God why God had let him die, and God said, “I sent two boats and a helicopter.. What more did you expect?!”

It frustrates me so much to hear that things like this happen.

Fact of Life #4: Faith is good. Too much faith is bad. Everything, even religion, in moderation, I suppose.

Fact of Life #3

Fact of Life #3: Even though the majority of teenagers are painfully nice well mannered, a group of unruly, annoying, uncivilized teenagers always seem to ruin our image.

Case in point. On the train ride home today from nyc (more on that trip later when I’m not so exhausted), there was this group of guys. Guys that I could most definitely find in my school. Being loud. And just overly rambunctious and irritating. It’s annoying when I see teenagers like that because, at the risk of sounding far too old and uptight, they give “these kids nowadays” such a bad image. I, and most of my friends and the people I know, do not see any need to disturb an entire train full of people when we’re having fun. I wouldn’t care if it was just their own ass on the line, but when my ass is involved, no.

So yea! More on Avenue Q and almost passing out at a Borders in NYC tomorrow!

Fact of Life #2

Fact of Life #2: Mangos taste good even when they’re sour.

I distinctly remember my friend telling me once that mangos were created when the ancient Indians (turban Indian, not feather Indian) compressed oranges and sugar deep underground.

 …….

I’m not quite sure why I believed him at the time, but I did. But now I know better! (Although I think it was only last year that I found out that mangos have pits in them. God I live a sheltered life.) In any case, I love mangos. And strawberries, watermelon, peaches, blueberries.. yea.

(That’s why I never knew mangos had pits in them… To me, that’s as unprocessed as it gets!)

Fact of Life #1

Lysol has facts of life. And so do I! These are just things that I’ve observed to be true, learned to be true, accepted to be true, or just want to assume to be true. Take them with a grain of salt. Or don’t, cause I might really mean some of them.

Fact of Life #1: No matter how much you love and deserve to own an item on ebay, someone random can and will snatch it out from under your nose with 23 seconds left in the auction.

About a week ago I found the perfect dress. (maybe not a big deal in the whole scheme of things, but seriously, this dress was/is PERFECT) I spent the better part of two hours madly refreshing, and was winning for most of it.. Until yes, 23 seconds came by, and failed to bid as high as I needed to. I moped. A lot.

 Link to auction

The link might expire sometime, so here’s a picture of the dress.

Could it be any more gorgeous?? I think not.
